What Happens If Engagement Ends
For foreigners in Saudi Arabia, one useful point in the Personal Status Law is that engagement is treated as a promise to marry, not the marriage itself. That means either side can step back before the marriage contract is completed. The law also explains what can happen to gifts and money given during the engagement period. In general, items given during engagement are treated as gifts unless there is clear proof that a payment was part of the dowry.
If one side ends the engagement for a reason connected to that person, there may be rules about returning what was given, if it still exists, or paying its value if it no longer exists. If the engagement ends because of death or for a reason not caused by either side, then gifts are generally not returned. This is especially important for foreigners who may be used to different customs in other countries. Knowing this can help couples and families avoid confusion and financial disputes before marriage. It also shows why keeping records and being clear about major payments can be very helpful from the beginning
